Part 1 of the 3 DVD series, Hangeul, Rise up on the World. The first debate on the creation of Korean letters took place in 1444, year 26 in the reign of King Sejong. This program, hosted by Professor Ross King of the University of British Columbia, covers King Sejong's desire to create letters for the Korean people, problems in using idu letters, and hangeul's strengths, scientific features and competitiveness. The program features interviews with Korean language scholars at home and abroad, including Kim Hun-sik of Inje University, Professor Ji Du-hwan of Kookmin University, and Professor Im Yong-gi of Yonsei University. It also shows a letter discovered in Andong in 1998 that was written right after hangeul was created.
