Jongmyo: A Shrine for Human Beings

Description:
Jongmyo is a royal shrine where royal ancestral rites are held. What has enabled Jongmyo Jerye, the rite of worshipping kings and queens of Joseon, to be observed over the past five centuries? Jongmyo’s ancestral rites, music, song and dance are integrated into a system rooted in Confucian ethics, philosophy, and thought. Based on a variety of techniques, this film features the four seasons, space, and architectural characteristics of Jongmyo, Jongmyo Jeryeak (royal ancestral ritual music), Ilmu (line dance), and Jongmyo Daeje (royal ancestral rite).
