The Munmyo at the Seonggyungwan (National Confucian Academy) was the country's primary Confucian shrine dedicated to Confucius and other Confucian sages. In total, the shrine contains tablets dedicated to thirty-eight sages from China and Korea. One of them is Song Siyeol. Song was at once the most lauded and the most reviled figure. What kind of person was he? Episode 16: Hwaseong, The Most Advanced Fortress of the 18th Century. As the weaponry of warfare shifted away from stones and arrows to gunpowder and cannons, fortresses had to be strengthened. First and foremost, walls had to be strong enough to withstand attacks from cannons and gunfire. Hwaseong was the most technologically advanced of the 18th century, built for defense in the age of firearms.
