Dark Night of the Soul

Description:
aka Anantha Rathriya. Inspired by Tolstoy’s last novel, Resurrection, and set in contemporary Sri Lanka, the film explores the workings of conscience in a world where social class facilitates the oppression of women. The main character, Suwisal (Ravindra Randeniya) is a successful, middle-aged company director with a melancholic personality and a forgetful mind. His life is suddenly upset when he is called to serve on a jury at a murder trial, whose defendant is a young sex worker accused of murdering a client. Suwisal recognizes her as Piyum (Swarna Mallawarachchi), the young servant from his aunt’s house, whom he knew twenty-five years ago. He had a sexual encounter with her and she became pregnant, yet he refused to see her again. The trial soon acquires considerably more complexity.
